How to Teach a Dog to Lie Down: Step-by-Step Guide

The “down” command is one of the most useful behaviors you can teach a dog — it’s a calmer, more settled position than sit, easier to maintain for long durations, and safer in high-distraction situations. Here’s how to teach it reliably.

Method 1: Luring Down from Sit

With your dog in a sit, hold a treat at their nose and slowly lower it straight to the floor between their front paws. As the nose follows the treat downward, the elbows typically fold and the dog lies down. Click or say “Yes!” the moment elbows touch the ground. Reward generously. Repeat 10+ times before adding the verbal cue “Down.”

Method 2: The Fold-Back Down

Sit on the floor with one knee raised. Lure your dog under your knee with a treat — most dogs fold naturally into a down to follow the treat under the low obstacle. Great for dogs who creep forward instead of lying down with Method 1.

Common Problems

Dog stands instead of lying down: Lower the treat more slowly and keep it closer to the body. Dog only downs on soft surfaces: Systematically practice on different surfaces. Dog won’t hold the down: Build duration gradually — see our stay guide.
