Mistake 1: Inconsistency
The #1 training killer. If “off” means one thing on Mondays and another on weekends, if the dog can jump on some people but not others, if “sit” sometimes requires three requests before anyone follows through — you’re not training, you’re confusing. Consistency of cue, of expectation, and of consequence is the foundation everything else is built on.
Mistake 2: Training Sessions That Are Too Long
Dogs (especially puppies) have short attention spans. Sessions over 10-15 minutes produce diminishing returns and can create negative associations with training. Five 5-minute sessions distributed through the day outperform one 30-minute session every time.
Mistake 3: Poisoning Cues

Timing errors are ubiquitous. If you say “Sit,” your dog sits, then stands back up, and you deliver the treat — you’ve rewarded standing, not sitting. Use a clear marker (a clicker or a sharp “Yes!”) at the exact moment of the desired behavior.
